Thread Identification & Pitch Chart

Identify a thread by diameter and pitch: thread form drawings, a metric / TPI pitch table with the near misses, sizes by measured diameter, and odd threads - UNEF, ME, BSB, cycle, Tr and Acme.

How to identify a thread

  1. Measure the diameter of the bolt with a calliper (worn bolts measure 0.1 - 0.2 mm under). For a nut or tapped hole, measure the bore and add about one pitch.
  2. Find the pitch with a thread gauge - try metric and inch leaves, along 10 or more threads. No gauge? Measure across 10 threads and divide by 10 (mm), or count the threads in one inch (TPI).
  3. Check for taper - measure both ends. A 1 in 16 taper means a sealing pipe thread (BSPT or NPT).
  4. Look at the form - rounded crests = 55° Whitworth / BSP; sharp V with flat crests = 60° metric, UNC / UNF or NPT; flat-topped teeth = lead-screw thread.
  5. Look it up below. Pipe threads are named after the pipe bore, so a 1/2" BSP thread measures about 21 mm.
